During June and July 2018, the yacht Sylvia will set sail again to the West Norwegian Coast. It is possible to book the whole yacht for charter. Sylvia has 3 cabins (Master aft, Forward double, Bunk cabin), each suitable for 2 persons. With one cabin for the skipper, there are 2 cabins available for you. The maximum allowable guests on board are 4 persons. In case of small children, please contact us for exceptions.
As Sylvia can cover the whole West Norwegian Coast, you can choose any marked harbour on the map to start your journey. Bookings can be made per week or per 2 weeks from any marked port, to any marked port. We are flexible and try to accommodate your preference or suggest some alternatives based on weather conditions.
Below you find some footage of the 2017 Season in the Stavanger / Bergen area:
1. Passage making Belgium - Norway
We start the season with the crossing from Nieuwpoort to Stavanger.
The voyage starts with a sail along the long sand beaches of Belgium and the beautiful dunes of the Netherlands, before we arrive in Vlieland in the Northern part of Holland.
From here we make a direct ca. 3 day-crossing to Norway. This means we will be sailing at night, cooking on board and taking part in a watch system. It's a great experience to watch the stars in the dark night, or just sit back and enjoy!
During the crossing, you'll learn to identify vessels on AIS and sail by radar. Watch for weather changes and take responsibility of Sylvia on your watch. At all times skipper Glenn will be just nearby when there is an issue or you feel unsure.
2. From Stavanger to Bergen: Vikings and Fjords!
Fjords are among the most dramatic and spectacular landscapes on the planet. The world heritage area, the West Norwegian fjords, embraces some of the longest, deepest, narrowest and most beautiful fjords in the world. Their scenery and cultural heritage have spellbound visitors down the ages. Many people consider the fjords the very symbol of Norway, the foremost nation of fjords in the world!
Our first destination is Stavanger. Stavanger is one of the oldest towns in Norway. Very close to the harbor lies an historic 18th century part of the town that is certainly worth a visit.
In the wide Bokna fjord north of Stavanger lies an archipelago of big and small islands which are called ‘the green islands’. The history of these islands goes way back to the Viking age. Different walks or a visit to the monastery of bird island Utsira are among the options.
East of Stavanger one of Norway’s highlights lies within reach: the spectacular Lysefjord with the famous ‘Preikestolen’. This is a gigantic rock 600 meters straight up from the river. With some physical effort, it is possible to walk up to the edge of this breathtaking viewpoint over the fjord.
3. From Bergen to Bergen
Bergen is the biggest and most important city along the Norwegian West coast. With 240 000 inhabitants it is the biggest city after Oslo. It is also a very touristic city, which some may like, and others may dislike. Every year 150 000 cruise ship passengers visit Bergen which makes it world’s most visited cruise ship destination!
The harbour of Bryggen with old wooden houses from the Hanseatic period, is protected by Unesco, and an obligated treat, as we probably moore here.
In the hart of the unique fjord landscape of Norway, lies the ‘Sognefjord’, the longest (200 km) and deepest (1300 m) Fjord of Norway. It disperses far into the glacier area of Jutenheimen and Jostedalsbreen. You can enjoy the snowy mountain tops and breathtaking waterfalls rushing down the steep flanks.
Nature has been generous to the Sognefjord, giving it features as varied as smooth polished rocks by the sea, green forests, rivers, waterfalls and high peaks. Nature-lovers are in their element with good seawater fishing and diverse flora and fauna.
4. From Bergen to Trondheim
We start in the Nordfjord, which is the smaller sister of the Sognefjord, half its length, and not as wide, but just as spectacular.
Stryn: Because of the favourable microclimate here, you can enjoy the ‘mediterranean atmosphere’, whilst having the possibility to make a hike to the Jostedal glacier.
Loen: Also a starting point for hikes to the glacier Kjenndalsbre. Loen also has a new attraction: a spectacular via ferata to the top of mountain Hoven (1011m) with spectacular bridges over deep cliffs!
5. From Trondheim to Bodo
This routes starts in the University Town Trondheim and passes through hundreds of islands. You will see an abundance of birds (Jan Van Genten , Parrot Divers, sea eagles,…) and there are plenty of opportunities to fish.
While we sail to Rorvik and next to Bronnoysund, the days get longer and longer. When we pass the Arctic circle (66º 30′ NB) , the sun shines through the night. We load ourselves with Vitamin D in the energising midnight sun.
Interesting places to explore in this region are the Thorgatten moutain with its famous hole, the Vega archipelageo, on the Unesco World Heritage list because of its unique Coastal culture, the Suv Sostre (Seven Sisters) mountain range, and its 1000 meter high peaks, the Svartissen Gletsjer….or just what comes our way…
6. From Bodo to Lofoten
From Bodo the sharp peaks of the mystical Lofoten are visible. This is nature on its best…
Majestic eroded mountain islands, fjords (Nusfjord and trollfjord not te be missed), pittoresk fishing villages (Reine, Henningsvaer, Solvaer), deserted bays,…
Some interesting places on the Ofoten side (mainland) are: Kjerringoy is a trade post with 15 buildings from the 19th century, the Rago national Park, Narvik.
Depending on the chosen route and timeframe, we can pass the islands to Harstad, sail the West coast of Senja and then to Andenes, a famous place for whales, dolphins, to feed themselves on all the fish coming up from the deep waters on the edge of the continental plate. From here we can cross the Vesteralen , another rugged island chain, and reach the Lofoten from the North.
